I’ve played games with the geisha
I’ve had free hugs
Ok, some all tied up. I think I need a picture of that. I’ve been tied up Japanese style. And now I meet a union group of naked news presenters in a bathtub. Why am I doing all this? Well, I find that Japanese society has two very different, opposing sides. This is not Just theory. It relates to all part of everyday life. This duality can be thumbed up as formal and polite on the outside, but everything else is kept in. And on the inside for many days are complex world, which can be kinky. And, me being me, it is exactly their kinky stuff that fascinates me the most. What do I mean by “kinky”? Well, let’s talk “sex”. In this case the fetish of sex with an interactive computer game. Come with me on my journey into a world of schoolgirls, geishas, sexy cartoon characters and silicon love dolls. I’m on a quest to understand this very particular Japanese stake on one of the most basic human instincts. And I am not alone. Help is a hand of James Farrow, professor of sociology of Sofia University in Tokyo.
I think in Japan there is much more in emphasis on the inner and outer, the formal and the informal. And I think any time you have this dimensions of the selves it can be eroticized. I think anything can be eroticized. Like people are very sexual and they… I think they sexualize just about the every aspect of life. And in Japan one of the more important aspects of life is notion of formality and informality, the outer self and the inner self. And I think that’s partly what’s been eroticized in the fetish industry. Is this notion of “me”, of underneath the formal self is a real pervert. Notion. And that’s sort of the fun idea, you know. And the notion. And, you know, in Japan there’s a lot of the uniform, so a lot of the display on uniform. So the idea that you are a student underneath of a dirty old man, you have a schoolgirl ofuku… You know, schoolgirls wear uniforms and underneath that is a… Is a horny girl. I mean the idea that the people are… Underneath their formality there is a sexy side
You see? The Japanese have created a rich and complex underworld of kinkiness, based on this duality between the inner and the outer self. Now, I know I am a foreigner here and the one lost in translation for the matter, but I am also a BBC journalist and so I find my way into the world of the image clubs? Places where man can act out their everyday fantasies like groping a pretty girl on the train.
Case we are going through the installations, got to… so… oh? Sorry.
This might be sex club rush hour. But it is still full of rules. So, shoes off and into a room, constructed exactly like a train carriage.
This would be… the train installation, right. Kisu, what are the services that the clients can have in here?
The manager explains to me that the client waits outside the door. Once the door is open a pretty girl is revealed inside the train car. Should be holding the handle, her back to the client, like she would be in a crowded train. This is one of the so-called “ejaculation services”, when there is n penetration, but basically everything else. The girl remains silent. And in the image club the man can do with no risk what would get them into big trouble in the real world.
In a real train, as I soon find out, groping is such a problem the women have a specially designated carriages for the morning rush-hour.
One of the rhythms of daily life in Japan’s community. And it’s interesting that one of the things in this clubs is the train. The train is an erotic place. The train is a place where you see strangers, beautiful strangers, you want to get close to them, or you don’t want to… But I think, you know, it is a common fancy and not everybody acts it out like not everybody is gonna grab somebody in a train or try pick somebody in a train. But clearly they… they think about it so that… this is… this spa, you know this… the fetish club is a place where you can act out that fancy.
After my little train adventure I am let wondering if all Japanese fantasies relates to daily life.
Walking around the Akihabara, the electronics neighborhood of Tokyo, I start finding all this interesting shops selling porn-comic books, little collector sexy dolls and an infinity of computer games. This is a world where the fetish lies in fantasy, virtual characters. It is the world of the Japanese gigs, the otakus.
So, time to visit some of the otaku’s hangouts. I start by checking out a shop full of adult Japanese comic books or mangas and little plastic figures.
The very amusing, actually, and very interesting. It is so different. There is one riding on a banana.
Soon I discover that nowadays this characters main home is a type of adult computer game called “bishoujou”, which would translate as “Pretty girl games”. Very young pretty girl games. Ok, so animation culture and game culture are pretty easy to understand. There is also something called “Idol culture”. Idol culture is basically other ration of singers, bands or actresses – the so called idols. And it seems that the idol of the moment, at least among the otakus, is the band AKB48 – group of girls between 12 and 21 years old that plays everyday in a theatre here in Akihabara. Ayumi Owari is one of AKB48 singers.
A fans is very kind and they times to times give me a letter.
And how are the fans? They are mostly men, how is it?
A men almost 80%
I meet some of this men before the show. I am curious and exited. It is my first direct contact with otakus. So, why this fascination with the idols?
Personally I’ve been a fan of many idols and in the moment AKB48 is one of the best around. I think they are doing the best to succeed and as well I want to support them. They are lovely.
Well, I like pretty girls and in the case of this theatre the stage is very near the audience. During the show sometimes I send this messages, it is possible to have this close contact with the band. 80 times if you near, 80 times.
So, AKB48 is your favorite idols?
Of course.
Once the concert starts, I can see what they mean.
The stage is close and the audience, mainly men, knows all the songs and dances. After the first fill-songs each girl tells a little anecdote of their day.
Good afternoon! The weather forecast is predicting, it is going to snow tomorrow. No! I really like it when it snows! And for the kind people that came here today we will have a little surprise regarding snow.
Now just between me and you, the 40 million listeners of the BBC World Service, I find this adoration of the preteen aged girls by fully grown men a bit unsettling. Professor Natsumi Ikoma from the International Christian University.
In Japan from 10th century on there is this tradition to adore young woman. Virgins. A sexual sort of adoration. And I think that is the reflection of the fact that they fear mature female sexuality, you know. They… they, they can not build a relationship with a mature women. They, they, they like under aged girls. Because they… they seem pure, seem naive, they seem willing to accept male control.
Back to Akihabara time to visit another otaku’s haven. The maid-café. The what? Well, it looks like a regular café. Until I realize, the waitresses are dressed like sexy French maids. The services differ from one café to the other, but in most the customer is called “Master” and greeted with the “Welcome home” once he arrives. Oh, and in some you can have your ears cleaned by your servant. Maid Nanomi tells me more.
The difference is that what we wear, that uniforms, and some… some of the services that we do are like drawing letters with the chocolate pen on saucers, on the food that we serve, right in front the customers.
This place is above Japanese love of cuteness. The uniforms are pink and pretty, the girls are perfectly groomed. And there are also another girl band as you can hear in this their CD, which I get as a present. It all feels kind of familiar. Girls in outfits making customers relax with their own music.
Dany downs on me. Geishas. Those traditional Japanese hostesses and entertainers. I found my geisha, Sachiko, in the city of Hakone.
Japanese ladies images, we have to be modest, ladies always step, one step behind a man.
We don’t express our emotion, not directly way. But if we feel angry to others we don’t express directly. The concept, the traditional beauty, we think, is… is that a sophisticated, and delicate, and graceful, and modest. So Japanese beauty is in a geisha world, still.
I get a little tester of this world when Sachiko introduces me to one of the drunken games, sure play with the customers at parties. Upturn tick up on a table, bounced around to the rhythm of the music. Every time the cup is lifted, customer have to bang his fist on the table.
Can I play once with you?
Yes, of course.
Ok.
I like it! But I’m sober.
Laughter is something I have been encountered a lot in my trip. I have the impression that when it comes to sex Japanese are not afraid to be silly. Professor James Farrow.
In the West people see sex as the very much pub center of the self. Well, in Japan, in its own traditions, never seen sex as the center of self-identity in the same way. And one of the implications of that what you do sexually doesn’t necessarily relate back to the rest of your life. So, that sex is a round that you can play around. And it is also the idea of sex being just play, so that you can have multiple sexual identity, go out, go to your fetish club and play out a role and that doesn’t indicate too much about yourself. And I think like this people have more freedom to explore a sensitizes, an alternative fantasies.
And it seems nobody knows more about an alternative fantasies than the crew at cable network paradise-TV. I ask Paradise-TV’s president, Tsuyoshi Shiba, to define his enterprise.
My dream was to have a broadcasting company and I wanted to do something new and different, so I decided to go for laughable, crazy and erotic.
Director Akihito Shibatta gives me an example of laughable, crazy and erotic.
Well, here is one example. We have some girls with breast-feeding and we use their milk to make a coffee, pancakes and even chocolate!
They invite me to watch a live broadcast of the new nuthen weather. They are almost like regular programs, with the difference that the presenters strip while reading the news.
Oh! And besides being naked this presenter has a guy tickling her with feather duster, while she is trying to remain serious. And I thought my job at the BBC was tough!
And on to the weather. Well, she, actually, starts by saying that so far this year she had sex with only 100 men. The forecast itself is wet, so they splent your water to be thrown at the weather lady
It is really cold and she is completely naked and now they wash her in a hot water because she might be freezing. I have a coat on and a scarf and I am freezing in it, it is all wet. Exs of job.
But here as well are encounter contradictions. Like it is ok to make breast milk pancakes. But genitals and pubic hair are big no-no.
So basically here were the editing all the… all the footish. This been done. So that ther blured or put a mosaic on the genitals. So basically here you can not show any genitals in Japan.
Never ever. But! Right now we are getting west-nights so we actually… this is, my opinion, a rule on a show everything. But Japan is, you know, the culture of shame, then we can not show everything. All the time.
Manager Kimishiro Suzuki explains to me that the mosaic business is the self-regulated one.
Some association can show a pupicare but not bajana. Our association… we can not show pupicare. Of course bajana. No bajana, no penis, no pupicare, no anal.
You think it is gonna change at some point that you’ll be able to show everything?
Well… I don’t think so. There are some imios which I received. We want smaller mosaic! We want more small mosaic! People say “yes”, but not everyone.
And not everyone I meet find things funny. For professor Natsumi Ikoma Japanese men are scared.
I think they are threatened. Because Japan is a patrilocal society but it’s not always been that. Before 10th century it was more like a matrilocal society. But since 9th… 10th century the situation changed and patrilocy came to Japan from China and Korea. I think the unconscious of the Japanese people feels that… well, they remember the past. And so I think the unconscious parts of male subject in Japan are afraid of the… of female existence.
So a trapped historical subconscious leads men into a comfortable virtual world which they control. Perhaps the ultimate is the world of the silicon love-dolls. Mr. Tabo is an avid collector of love-dolls.
I’ve got more than 50. The first one I got about 40 years ago, junior high school. When I was young it was a 100% sex, but as time goes by you began to have feelings for the doll. Because I am a collector I try not get too close to my dolls. Even I could get to obsess.
I checked with Mr. Kawamura, an editor of “Idoloid”, a magazine completely dedicated to this silicone girlfriends.
What happens is some men are searching for someone they cannot find. Their konomi feel aroused but it is virtual character they create. So instead of a real woman they prefer dolls, which they can mold into character of their own making.
This character is young.
One of the words I’ve been hearing around the most is “lolita”. It is all about little girls. Professor Natsumi Ikoma feels the pressure.
Pehaps the ordinary Japanese life itself is a role playing for male and for female as well. I was in England and when I was in England I felt like totally free. Without any expectation cast upon me. But in Japan I am very much aware that some sort of expectation, social expectation is on me and I have to act accordingly.
If you wanna look at outside a Japan it is considered normal for people to be obsessed with things. I… I think that… that it has a little bit more room for fetishism.
You know, it is legitimate thing for you to be focused on your own little narrow area of interest. It is a roam of privacy in a world where amount of social pressure is pretty great.
They feel only safe in a situation where their role is fixed and other party’s role is also fixed.
So on the ironies of this place I think that they… they fastened a sense of breaking social boundaries. But they are also govern themselves by a whole set of region rules such you have to follow. And one of the reason for as I really strongly discouraged of going in there is that for they follow all the rules and that I cannot respect even the rules of the club.
All these rules and fixed roles. Thinking that underneath the quiet outer person is a rock or sexual athlete is a mistake. This is not about letting stuff out of your system behind closed doors. It is actually about bringing the system in with you. Here control reaches right into the heart of the fantasy world. You can not touch passengers in real trains, but you can grope the girl in the make-believe carriage. You can fold of her, but not have sexual intercourse. Sometimes it feels as if the politeness of the Japanese itself is being sexualized. I can’t help but having this image in my head. The Japanese fetish industry is like… like a sexual tea ceremony.
